I always wanted to do this. Run android apps on my PC, and feel the same enthusiasm that i get while playing angry birds on my phone. I found quite a few ways to do it though. One of them is to install the sdk for android with the required platform and other stuff like the eclipse and act like an app developer, which i am not quite frankly. It’s quite simple considering that the installers do what they got to do in your windows environment and things work out pretty well. But the fact is, i ain’t no developer. i am just a consumer wanting his favorite android apps running on windows and the process of getting the apps source code, then compiling and running may seem tedious and a pain in the head. What i needed was a ready-to-go player that runs my apps. Maybe a Virtual Machine with GingerBread installed may do. Yes, it does quite well and i’ll be writing about it in my next article. But the headline of today is BlueStack – a company specializing in integrating android and windows and making a multi-platform platform or in short, as of now, run android apps on windows.
In the early days of it’s development when BlueStack introduced it’s so called “revolutionary” idea, a few entrepreneurs got interested. The “few” – Ignition Ventures, Radar Partners, Helion Ventures, Redpoint Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz – turned out to be project’s holders, sparring about $7.6 million or so in funding. The alpha version of the same concept known as the BlueStack app player for windows7 is available for download now link.
The free version gives the player with 10 preloaded apps and an option to install 26 more apps whereas the pro version has an unlimited app support. The application runs android apps quite quick and full screen. This has a time advantage over the conventional method of running android apps since you don’t need to boot android every time and everything starts in just a click.

A couple of days back, steam – the online gaming central – launched an app for android and iOS. The app is still in it’s early closed beta, so expect it to be buggy and with no great features as of now! The invitation, as of now, is also sent to a lucky few who tried to login to steam through the mobile app. Others still wait. But since it’s beta, there’s nothing much great that you guys may be missing.
Firstly, the app is a “steam chat and buy” mostly, as of the current beta and no online play is feasible. Also it does not support spectating of live games. The things you get are :

• Chat with online steam friends.
• Steam news and other update news.
• Access to community groups.
• Shop online at steam store.

The chat feature is really great and it allows you to chat with your online steam friends like other chat apps. The “Access to community groups” feature does literally as written, it only lets you see your groups (and leave them too) and provides no way for a community chat.

The USP is however, for the beta, is that it keeps you in touch with the latest sales and game releases, so you won’t miss any of those tempting weekend or festive sales. It also lets you gift your currently bought item, just like the old pc version. The UI and design is similar, if not identical, to the pc version, with dominance of black that looks quite soothing to eyes.
If you haven’t got an invite yet, don’t be upset, just try and login through the mobile app. This sends a mail to the steam team that you are interested and they will soon let you be part of it.
The app is not yet feature-packed and needs a lot of work on some of the basic steam features it should give but what it gives, as of now, is pretty good and nice!!!
So if you are a steamer and want a shot at this great app just download it from Android Market for android and for iOS from Apple Store and try signing in. You’ll get your invitation pretty soon, i hope.

Android App for Safe Driving

Ever wanted to install a cam security system in your car that senses traffic and nearby environment to give warnings for driving slow or itself slow the car to avoid collision. Well, such systems may cause you a fortune. Here’s a free, if not better, alternate. The iOnRoad app for Android is now available for download and is currently free. Don’t get deceived by the name. It’s not for the iOS. Here “i” means “you” and not the “apple” or i think this way. Well, we are not interested in the naming convention though.

The Android app is a star. It acts as your assistant, watching road as you drive and notifying during crucial events. It utilizes you devices rear camera and applies some complex visual algorithms to detect the car or truck in front of you and then requires some more calculations to get the distance between the two of you(distance is displayed as a measure of time like 1.4 secs apart). If it’s safe, a green path is shown, else yellow caution symbol or even a red alert sign is flashed on your Android.
Another great feature is it’s background run capability, that allows you to quickly hover through your emails or messages or turn on your music player while still getting alerts from iOnRoad.
One thing that adds the oomph to the app is socializing part that lets you unlock achievements while you drive. It’s meant to promote safer driving habits though. Also you can upload screen shots of some reckless driver passing you by or some strange graffiti on the backside of a truck directly to your facebook account. Cool!!!

It looks like you are in some kind of a video game like those Need For Speed series, with your virtual assistant watching your back, or in this case your front!!!
So, next time you slip your lipstick while driving and need to search for it while still driving(although i condemn this behavior) or need to text your boss, that you’ll be late, you know iOnRoad is your eyes on road.
There are two things as of now, that i think iOnRoad can add. One is the compatibility for other OS’s and second is a navigation system built in it so you don’t want to have an extra GPS device installed.
